Ye are gods
Understanding Your God-Given Identity
There is a Psalm in the Bible that says:
“What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than Elohim (or angels) and have crowned him with glory and honor.” (Psalm 8:4-5, NKJV)
This is a profound definition of man—a little lower than God, clothed in glory and honor.
However, many struggle with negative self-talk, which stems from a lack of understanding of who they truly are. Negative self-talk is self-shaming. It is a deep issue. Something goes wrong, and you condemn yourself. Something doesn’t work out, and you blame yourself. When expectations fall short, you direct all the pain and blame inward, shaming yourself.
This lack of understanding, that you are a little lower than God, clothed in glory and honor, is dangerous.
Humility Is Not Shame
Humility is not the same as shame. When we are called to be humble, we are not being called to be shameful.
Secret sins, hidden conversations, and shameful habits, those things we do in private that we wouldn’t want the world to know, are signs that we do not understand our true nature. The places we go, the websites we visit, the chats we engage in, and the behaviors we hide—they all indicate a distorted self-image. We fail to see ourselves as God sees us: a little lower than Him, clothed in glory and honor.
Shame is Repulsive
Shame is not just internal, it repels others. Sometimes, you are about to close a deal, and at the last minute, they change their minds. Shame lingers over you. People perceive it, and they pull away. Shame isolates.
And here lies the real problem: when you are rejected, repelled, or abandoned, you naturally crave acceptance. This often leads people further down the path of compromise. Some even attempt to buy acceptance—spending money on a shameful lifestyle just to feel embraced, valued, or noticed.
What a tragedy.
Know Who You Are
Many live in desperation, seeking affirmation from the wrong people and places. But when you know that you are a god (Psalm 82:6), you are not the one who has to be accepted, you are the one who accepts.
The spirit of shame can only be removed through the coding and programming of God’s nature in you. And this programming happens through the speaking of the Word, the renewal of your mind by what God says about you.
“I said, ‘You are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High. But you shall die like mere men and fall like one of the princes.’” (Psalm 82:6-7, NKJV)
Your mindset of shame must be transformed by the Word.
Rise to Your Position
Understand what God says about you:
“What is man that You are mindful of him? You have made him a little lower than angels and crowned him with glory and honor.” (Psalm 8:4-5)
You are a god.
You are full of glory.
You are full of honor.
Get up from eating with the pigs! You were made to sit in the throne room of God. Change your perspective on life, you are not below; you are above!
“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:6, NIV)
